THE HISTORY OF MANORA

WOODSTOCK ESTATE

The property originally wood land’s II was owned by Madam Jeanne Mathilde Emilie Le Pelerine Durell ( Nee De Canville) French by birth and British subject by marriage. She was born in Valailles ( France ), she had one daughter Mimi who was settled in the United States of America and after her husband Mr. Durell a senior British Army Officer left and went back to the England. The present owners acquired this property from her decendents. Wood Land’s II started from the present day Gethia Sanitorium up to the forest chowki, a stretch of about a km and half and more. Urban legends for some guests, absolute truth for the locals and fun stories for people like us. The main house is over 70 years old and was the pride of a proud English lady, Madam Durell. Wife of a British Army officer, Madam Durell was the real deal. She wore breeches, rode horses and was never seen in public without her double-barelled gun. She was enchanted with Gethia and voila, an entire hill side was hers. Other stories are not as exciting, like Mahatma Gandhi’s stop for a tea or Jim Corbett visiting regularly, though they may impress some.
